Taking the road less traveled.
Mitch Butier didn't even own a backpack. But following his graduation from LMU, Mitch and his future wife, Teresa, headed to the Pacific Northwest for a six-week outdoor adventure. "Everything," Mitch says, "is a learning moment."
Mitch had been an accounting major back on the bluff. "I always wanted to go into business," he says, "and accounting is the language of business." Today, Mitch is senior vice president and chief financial officer for Avery Dennison Corp., a leading labeling and packaging company.
As the seventh of nine children, Mitch learned early, he says, "how to effect change in a diverse environment." Those skills were amplified during his extensive international travel for business and pleasure.
What can recent graduates and others learn from Mitch's corporate success and global roaming? "You learn how to be effective in different environments much quicker by stepping out of your comfort zone and seeing how other folks do things."
