During his time at LMU, Jim wrote for The Loyolan and his affinity to write fiction further developed after enrolling in a UCLA Extension workshop in 2005. His storytelling then led to a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in Fiction from Stanford University in 2007.

In 2010, Jim's piece, "Costello," was published by The New Yorker incorporating unique elements of his own life as a plumbing equipment salesman. From there, in 2014, Jim continued to draw from his personal experiences to create his widely acclaimed story collection, Middle Men: Stories, with Simon & Schuster.

Most recently, Jim created Lodge 49, an AMC television series that he and showrunner Peter Ocko described as "a contemporary Arthurian fable." The show was executively produced by Paul Giamatti and Dan Carey, and spanned two seasons from 2018- 2019. It is currently streaming on Hulu.
