Statement from Tom
My work with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) has brought me full circle to the roots of my career. I entered the Jesuit Novitiate in 1983 and was there long enough to experience the 30-day spiritual exercises. This was one of the most transformational events of my life and set me on the course I am on today.

While not a former Jesuit Volunteer (FJV) myself, I have accompanied Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) as a support person and spiritual director. I’ve recruited JVs during my tenure at LMU Campus Ministry and learned about the power of the JV experience from family and friends who are FJVs themselves.

I often say, and I have found it affirmed with each former Jesuit Volunteer that I meet, they are solid human beings with a clear moral compass. FJVs, almost to the person, recall their service with JVC as one of the most transformational experiences of their life.

It is a privilege to accompany JVs as they discern their path forward to find where their hearts are drawing them to live their lives.

Share Advice to Guide Students Hoping to Pursue a Career with Social Impact or in Nonprofit Industries
•   Be clear about your own mission and values. Let this be a guide to the type of work you do and who you do that work with.

•   While nonprofits are guided by their mission, they are also businesses. If you are interested in being in a leadership role in a nonprofit, consider developing business management and financial skills. This is often sorely lacking in nonprofits.

•   Network, network, network. Develop a broad set of relationships and maintain them. These relationships may turn into future mentors, partners, or sources of employment. Treat your relationships with respect and integrity.
