Why this Organization/Cause is Important to You or the Nominee
Heart of Los Angeles is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides youth ages 6 to 24 with free after-school programs in academics, arts, athletics, health and wellness, and family services, all within a trusted and nurturing environment. We currently serve more than 3,100 youth in the Westlake, South Central, and Watts areas of Los Angeles. Under the leadership of Tony Brown, the organization has sustainably increased its annual operating budget from $2.3 million to over $9 million, enabling Heart of Los Angeles to reach more underserved children with programs that help them realize their full potential. Heart of Los Angeles has assisted hundreds of young people in becoming the first in their families to attend colleges, trade schools, or certification programs, empowering thousands to achieve their dreams, pursue their passions, and break the cycle of generational poverty.

Share Advice to Guide Students Hoping to Pursue a Career with Social Impact or in Nonprofit Industries
Volunteering helps us build empathy amidst these polarizing times and reminds us of our responsibility to support our neighbors, the cities we live in, or once called home. It's one of the best ways to make a real difference. Governments and charities can't solve society's biggest problems on their own — they need the help that volunteers bring to make our communities stronger.
How Can Others Help or Get Involved
At Heart of Los Angeles, every hour spent mentoring, coaching, or teaching transforms young people's lives and supports a future where every youth can pursue their dreams. Our community events, including Party in the Park and free concerts, offer a warm welcome to students and create a safe, nurturing environment for learning and exploration.
